After teaching your students the practical techniques of the beauty
industry and before they go out on the floor to perfect their skills,
why not teach them how to market and sell themselves and your school's
salon?
Offer them tips on how to get new clients through marketing and
promotion and how to strengthen relationships with existing clients.
This is a very important side of the cosmetology business that is not
currently taught in most schools. The result, students leave with a
license, but are ill prepared for the real world.
Your school can be different!
Supply your students with business cards, school brochures showcasing
your services, postcards which they can hand out in the salon or mail
(see pages 7-10) - arm them with these and other marketing tools and it
will benefit you both. When a student is not busy on the floor, give
them tasks such as coming up with a special promotion. This will
encourage them to think with a marketing mindset. Door hangers are also
a great promotional piece you can order and have students distribute
within a 5-7 mile radius of your business. All of this activity
provides real life experience and ultimately can benefit your salon
with a better bottom line.
It is very important that students understand that when they graduate,
it will be up to them to get new clients. Teach them to think
proactively and not wait for the next walk in or get stuck in the back
